E-Learning Information - 2018

During the parents’ evening held in term 2 of this year, most parents and learners have already been informed of the advantages of E-Learning and the method of implementation GLA will follow. I would like to again give a short overview of the process up to date.

New School Fundraiser

sheep-target1

Some of us count sheep in our dreams, but others process sheep to make those dreams a reality.

Which is exactly what five Global Challengers did for the past few weeks. In order to complete the building of the GLA Eco Campus we need close to R6 million. This may seem like a distant reality but we have realised that every faith filled initiative, however small, has built into the momentum of the project and will eventually result in its completion.

And so, this faith filled and not so small initiative, lead to 3 ladies and 2 men dedicating one whole month to working on sheep farms in Australia. Working 12-14 hours a day, they have processed nearly 45 000 lambs in the last 4 weeks. Now that is a great achievement!

Let’s see if we can match their muscle with our Moola.

Our challenge to the global community:

Lets match a R10 note to each of the 45 000 sheep they processed.

With only 5 mins to gather a few of belongings for the evening, they headed off into the bush to ‘survive’ the night out! Along the route, there posed a number of obstacles including building a stretcher to carry their own firewood and food items up a very steep hill for a number of kilometres. With night fall approaching the rush was on to be the first group up the hill to choose a good campsite for the evening. Although there were some difficulties and slips along the way, all team members eventually made their way to the top, where an amazing sunset and view across the valley awaited.

Madiba Day Fun!

Copy of 11E Xanlee Jantjies Nollie Sonjica and SiphesihleLast week each register class in GLA had to use their creativity to encourage and spoil people for in Jeffreys bay for Madiba day. Although they went out to spoil others, many classes came back feeling they were the ones encouraged and blessed!

GLA vs Humansdorp Secondary

GLA Rugby 13Last week GLA’s first rugby team played against a mixed team from Humansdorp Secondary. It was an intense game as both teams came for the lorals. From the start both teams played the ball and a good game of running rugby was displayed. There were several nail biting moments when one team was just about to score, but couldn’t due to very good defence by the other. In the end Humansdorp Secondary scored a try late in the first half, and that was enough to secure a 7-0 victory. Well done to both teams!

2013 Here we come!

2013, Here we come!
After the recent 2012 Awards Ceremony it is evident that amazing growth took place over the past 3 years. From a humble start with only 61 students, GLA has grown into a respectable and unique High School providing excellence in academic standards, discipline and an exciting extra curricular program.
All this doesn’t happen without thought and extensive planning. That is why the Staff of GLA spent the weekend in conference setting out the plans for 2013!
We would like to thank Sea Shells – Luxury Holiday Apartments for providing us with excellent conference facilities. www.seashell.co.za

A Testimony of Growth

GLA’s 2012 Head Boy Speech
Dylan Collings A testimony of growth
Those of you who attended the 2012 Awards Evening will testify that we had two remarkable young leaders leading the Ambassadors and students of 2012.
We would like to share with you the Speech made by our Head boy for 2012; Dylan Collings
Good evening Mr & Mrs Mc Farlane, members of the governing body, parents, teachers and my fellow students.
It is a great privilege and honour to be standing here in front of you all representing the school I love - Global Leadership Academy.
I have been asked to share a message about growth…                 I’m no expert on the topic of growth – but the more I read  and researched the topic,  the more I began to see just how important it is in our lives. I recently read the book entitled ‘Today Matters’ by John C Maxwell, it highlights 12 daily practises which guarantees tomorrow success – Growth is one of them.
An extract from the book reads, ‘The Tartar tribe of central Asia spoke a certain curse against an enemy. They didn’t call for their enemy’s swords to rust or for their people to die of disease – instead they said –“may you stay in one place – forever”. The unhappiness and frustration caused by this was punishment enough.'
I’m privileged enough to have been at GLA for the past three years under the love, guidance, safety, knowledge and care of all of the Amazing Christian teachers at GLA. These valuable, wise and wonderful teachers have nurtured and guided us all that we were all able to grow into Christian human beings; they continually guide us into reaching our potentials. It would be impossible not to grow in a school such as Global Leadership Academy
Certain species of fish will grow according to the size of their environment. Put them in a small bowl and they will remain small even as adults. People are the same. If they live in a harsh, limiting environment – they stay small but put them in an environment that encourages growth- they will expand to reach their full potential.Thank you GLA for providing us all with an environment filled with love, warmth, trust, care and knowledge - the learners are able to flourish.
Mental and spiritual Growth however does not occur naturally –I feel it comes from a decision to want to continually improve yourself.
Learners – we need to take responsibilities for our own growth. Jim Rohn once said – In order to do more – we need to be more. Our duty as Christians is to give of ourselves to others.
We have a responsibility to grow, to seek and experience improvements daily. In doing so our potential grows and so does our ability to make an impact on the world
Learners I encourage you all to set a goal for yourselves – a goal to grow in all areas. Surround yourselves with valuable, wise people. Learn from them,  read, talk to people, help people, participate in class and school events, learn from youth groups and most of all ask our heavenly father to aid us in our  growth journey. And remember that this journey never ends.
Global Leadership Academy has taught me to be responsible and accountable for my decisions, it has taught me independence and encouraged me to stay focused and accomplish missions. I came into this school just another face in the crowd, but I leave here an individual. I have decided to take my core values to heart and will strive to live by them daily – striving for excellent work ethics, compassion towards my fellow beings, to always be respectful and to have integrity in all my deeds.
To my fellow ambassadors - Vasti, Marelise, Caro, Johan, Franko and Wouter –Thank you that we could grow together, thank  you for all your support  - we are a great team.  I love you all and wish only the best for you in the future. To Charne, one word- WOW, couldn’t have asked for a better head girl, you were always on the frontline, prepared to help and always gave it your best.
To my fellow learners – I’m so proud of you all. It is a great honour to receive a prize tonight – continue learning, continue growing! The world needs people like you. I challenge you all to go out into the world and make a difference, it need not be a huge deed, but lots of little deeds are good enough – be strong witnesses of your faith.
Mrs Franken, Mrs Mc Farlane, to the amazing teachers at GLA as well as the global teams – We thank you for all your hard work, dedication, faith, love and prayers. You are all truly amazing!  One doesn’t realise how lucky we are to have teachers like these, they not only aim to develop us intellectually, but spiritually, socially and emotionally. Through this they have made me who I am today.
Learners do not take them for granted!  Love and cherish them.
Lastly I would like to compare myself to a tree – I need sunlight which is God in my life – without him I cannot survive!
I have roots which are my Christian values and principles; - they keep me anchored in life
I need nutrients and minerals in order to grow and flourish – these are the valuable teachers, wise friends and love of family who play a role in every part of my life!!
I want to be a tree where people can shelter under.
On that note I would like to thank my parents, friends, family and teachers who along with God’s blessing have made me who I am today.
There is a forest growing in GLA, so take this advice from a tree:
1.            Remember your roots
2.            Go out on a climb or limb
3.            Stand tall and proud
4.            And enjoy the view
GLA FOREVER IN MY HEART
Thank you and God bless

SA Surfing Championships

GLA at the Eastern Province Surfing Council
Tim Baard, a grade 9 learner at Global Leadership Academy competed for Eastern Province Surfing at the SA Junior Surfing Championships this past week in Jeffreys Bay.
He was appointed as Vice-captain of the Team and he fulfilled his duties to all expectations and his efforts helped the Team to secure the award as The Best Team Spirit of the event.
Tim rose to the occasion and surfed really well to reach the semi finals of the Under 15 Boys. He placed an excellent equal 5th overall in this division and the valuable points he earned for the Team helped the Eastern Province to win the all important Presidents Cup for the Winning Team.
GLA is extremely proud of Tim’s achievement at these Championships.

Cum Laude Tour

GLA Top Ten Tour
Global Leadership Academy once again challenged the norm! Our Grade 8-12 Top Ten Academic candidates’ hard work has not gone unnoticed! As reward for those who maintained an average above 75% in the first three terms, Ms. Adette Bos and Mr. Paul du Plessis organised a three-day tour to Mossel Bay (from the 25-27th September).
These academics were anything but nosy book-worms as the adventure bug bit them on the first day of the tour. Their first stop was at Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours where they learned more about the local forestry as they glided through the tree tops. Next they stopped at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum in Mossel Bay and explored the life size model of Dias’ ship. Their adventure continued into the Plett Puzzle Park. Here their brain power was really tested as they had to find their way out of the maze and solve tricky puzzle boxes along a forest walk. One of the teachers couldn’t help but comment: “Wow, this is a-maze-ing!” The last stop on the tour was at Monkey Land and Birds of Eden where they saw the importance of caring for the environment and the horrible consequences of illegal pet trade.
With their brains refreshed these strong academics have one more term till the end of the year to show what their made of and to show the school that they deserve the same reward next year.
We want to say a big thank you to our sponsors: Bees Land Slaghuis, Jetco Transport and Tsitsikama Adventures who helped make this tour such a success!

Global Leadership Academy once again challenged the norm! As reward for the Grade 8-12 Top Ten Academic candidates, Ms. Adette Bos and Mr. Paul du Plessis organised a three-day tour to Mossel Bay (from the 25-27th September).

Art Weekend Fun!

On the weekend of the 8th and 9th of September, art, paint, creativity and fun was abounding for the art students of Global Leadership Academy.  Every term the students and their art teacher, Lize-Marie Smit come together to experiment with new techniques and to enjoy different styles of art from around the world.
The theme for this weekend was colour and emotion. Students were encouraged to move away from their desire to work neatly and perfectly ‘within the box’, and rather to ‘loose control’ as they paint and experiment.
The highlight of the weekend happened on Saturday morning when the art students were presented with the works of Jackson Pollock, given paintbrushes and one big canvas. With music and paint all over the place, the atmosphere was explosive. One or two students were even seen rolling around on the canvas.
Monday morning the students of Global Leadership Academy gathered around the big artwork and started discussing and asking how such an abstract work can be called art.  To this question, modern artists would answer: “It is the fact the artwork provoked the question that made the moment an artwork.”
In that case, if art can be captured in a memory, then this perfect weekend was nothing less than masterpiece.

GLA Sport Dag

Our Lucky Cement Bag Sponsor

Gabriel Jewellers and Watches support construction of new High School
During the recent GLA Trolley Pro the public was given the opportunity to “donate a bag of cement” for the construction of the new high school facilities planned for Global Leadership Academy just adjacent to Fountains Mall. Gabriel Jewellers further supported the schools cause by sponsoring a Citizen Gift Voucher to the value of R2500.00 for one lucky sponsor of a cement bag. Global Leadership Academy and Gabriel Jewelers would like to congratulate Mr Mason Ranger who’s ticket was drawn in the lucky draw that followed.
Global Leadership Academy has launched the “Buy a Bag of Cement” project to create some fundraising momentum for the construction of their school. According to Ms McFarlane, the principal of Jeffreysbay ‘s own High School, they want to start construction on the foundations before the end of this year. She also said that the support and response from the local community has been very encouraging over the past few months and that they welcome any support for the building of Jeffreys bay’s very own and first High School, whether it is a bag of cement, or a few bricks, every contribution makes a difference.

Help us lay a firm Foundation

FoundationOne of the most difficult things for me to do is to ask for money. When I get to heaven one day, I have often said, I am going to spend the first million years attending the workshop on money. I would love to fully comprehend the mind of our Lord about it! Anybody else care to join me?

I firmly believe in sacrificial living. It helps us as a school community to stay dependant on the Lord and it teaches us to walk in the poor man’s shoes. We learn to be content. When you are surrounded with need, you learn to give. It is not the only way, but it sure is an incredible one!

2012 Trolley Race

Global Leadership Academy Trolley Race
This year our trolleys were sponsored by Fountains Mall, Compu Camm Signs, Saverite, Woodlands Dairy, Nissan, Spar, Smhart Security, Caltex Wavelands, Pick ‘n Pay and Ubuntu Bricks.
There were 4 heats and in each one the competition was fierce! In the end it was Grade 10 E's Trolley (sponsored by Compu Camm Signs) in third place, Grade 10A (sponsored by Ubuntu Bricks) in second place and Grade 12 E (Sponsored by Smhart Security) that crossed the finish line first!
In the category for best trolley, it was no easy decision for the trolleys were spectacular. We want to congratulate Caltex Wavelands who received first place, Ubuntu Bricks in second and Woodlands Dairy in the third place. Well done!
We want to say a big thank you to all the sponsors of the 2012 GLA Trolley Race! It was a big success!

Madiba Day Market

Madibah_Day_3_webIn our quest to raise up young people with a servant hearts here at Global Leadership academy we have become increasingly aware of how little interaction there is between ‘those who have more’ and ‘those who have less’. So our desire was to create a space where the two worlds could collide and effect change: Mandela Day Market.

River of Dreams

GLA ‘s Musical River of Dreams
This past weekend the community of Jeffrey’s Bay was treated to a musical by the students of Global Leadership Academy. Both evenings, saw an ordinary classroom transformed into a spectacular venue and the foyer become a decorative entrance. “River of Dreams” reminded us that each one of us has a dream in side of us. Yet whatever your dream is, it is direction, not intention that determines your destination.
“River of Dreams” comments on how, as a performer, there are many paths. One needs to root yourself in Christ so securely that when the rains of ‘worldly reality’ comes, one does not erode only to be washed away down a path of destruction. To expose certain lies gives one the ability to seek and see truth in Jesus, our Saviour, in a world that is often only after profit. The evening was therefore more than just a production; it was an encouragement to choose the right path.
We want to thank everyone that came to this musical and to Savuti Nursery and Garden centre, Fountain Mall who assisted in creating the decorative entrance.

Grade 10 Tourism Tour

GLA Gr. 10 Tourism Tour
This was the way the Tourism tours started out in 2010: for a school project the grade 10 Tourism class worked on an itinerary for a trip to Plettenberg Bay. Seeing the pictures on paper, however, wasn’t enough and they transformed the project into a real trip.
Three years later and things haven’t changed. Once again the Gr 10’s worked out their own itinerary and once again they wanted to go.
On Friday the eleventh they jumped on the bus and were off. After a visit to Storms River mouth and the Big Tree they booked in at the very hospitable Amakaya Backpackers. On Saturday the road stalls, Harkerville Market, Knysna Elephant Park and Canoeing at Forever Resorts ensured an entertaining day and on the last day Monkeyland and the Tenikwa Wildlife Centre were visited on the way back.
A successful trip and a once in a lifetime experience to many!

Tiener Toneelspel Finals

GLA at Final Round of Tiener Toneelspel
Two Global Leadership Academy students, Inecke Loubser and Johann van Tonder, joined the top 75 high school performers in the country in Cape Town last week to take part in the final rounds of the Stad Kaapstad Tiener Toeneelspel Kompetisie. The Artscape Theatre Complex in conjunction with Belville High School were once again the fantastic hosts. The competition consists of four knockout rounds, including an improvisation round with a famous actor, with the top 8 producing full programs at the grand finale on Saturday night. Well known theatre and television personality Stian Bam (David Greef, 7de Laan) and RSG presenter Christina Wessels were some of the judges in the first round. Our two candidates didn't make it further than the Thursday night round but have grown immensely as performers bringing back fresh ideas and honed skills into the Jeffrey's Bay performance scene. We look forward to next year's competition and more wonderful results from our local talent.

Dit was egter GLA wat aan die einde koning gekraai het vir die eerste keer hierdie seisoen. Hierdie span gaan net van krag tot krag en kom volgende Vrydag, die 11de Mei, teen Alexandria te staan. Grade 11 Tourism Tour

GLA Grade 11 Tourism Tour
On Thursday, 26 April 2012, twelve Grade 11 scholars from Global Leadership Academy left on yet another Tourism tour. This time of the Garden Route and R62.
Walking across the Storms River bridge was as daunting as ever and overnighting at the Tsitsikamma Forest Village gave them just enough time to decide whether they wanted to bungee at Bloukrans or not. Next God gave them a perfect day and they spent four hours of fun in the sun and water at Adventure Land. The day came to an end with some real French Hot Chocolate at the La Carla Mask Atelier on the N2.
Other activities during the tour included the popular Sedgefield Wild Oats market as well as The Garden of Eden and the Wolf Sanctuary. They also rock and rolled with Southern Comfort's Zorbing and quad bike activities. On the way to Calitzdorp Spa for a swim in the hot springs they stopped at George to see The Avengers in 3D and got their 'driving licenses' at the Safari Ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn.
The tour showed them a different side of this popular route. They felt like real tourists in their own country while also able to spend time with good friends.

Kunstefees Besoek

Matrics Tour To Cape Town

First GLA Matrics Exploring Cape Town
On Friday, 23 March 2012, twelve Tourism students from Global Leadership Academy left Jeffrey's Bay for yet another adventure.
The students were given the opportunity to arrange their own tour in 2010 and since then travelling once a year became a must. The exposure of the industry and it's wide range of sectors is necessary as they are on the brink of making important decisions regarding their futures.
Cape Town was the destination and for a number of the students it was a first. Before we arrived there they stopped at one of the most beautiful campuses in South Africa, the NMMU in George. They were informed about the possibilities available to them and how to grab on to them.
In Cape Town they had the misfortune of someone breaking into the backpackers and stealing one scholar's clothes. It did not at all spoil their fun and activities like visiting Robben Island, celebrating with the Cape Town Carnival, going to Ratanga Junction, experiencing Table Mountain, using the public trains, going up to Cape Point, ice skating at Grand West Casino, relaxing at the Waterfront and riding on Africa's only Toboggan Track at Cool Runnings. These experiences colored in their true picture of the incredible Cape Town.
They also had the pleasure of enjoying Stellenbosch and the surrounding areas by doing a cheese and wine testing.
Cape Town is a true example of successful tourism in South Africa but the journey did not just expose them to that, it showed them a true bit of life.

Our Visit to Scifest Africa

Our Visit to Scifest Africa
Friday the 16th of March started with excitement for seventeen GLA students.  These students, and two teachers that accompanied them, decided to trade their school benches for laboratories and Mathematics classes for laser shows at the annual Scifest Africa in Grahamstown.
This national Science festival serves to promote public awareness and engagement with science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation.  It shows students a more complete picture of science.  This was clearly seen in the way the GLA students enjoyed themselves throughout the day.  Eight students (two teams of four students) also entered a competition that entailed that they had to build the best cantilever by using recyclable material. They did their school proud. The one team acquired a 3rd place in this competition and the other team was honoured for using innovative techniques that has not been seen before at the Scifest Africa 2012.
The national Science festival at Grahamstown can count on GLA students visiting them again next year.  Thank you for your contribution to our students’ passion for science.

On Wednesday 1st of February, Global Leadership Academy left Jeffreys Bay to enjoy a fun filled sports day at the NMMU Athletics Stadium in Port Elizabeth.

GLA goes camping

adventurecampSummer, sea and fun. That was the theme for GLA ‘s recent student camp held at Van Stadens’s Resort.  While Summer holiday was the theme for the camp, it was in truth no holiday for the students! Problem solving, teamwork and ethics were tested as students were put in various teams and given different challenges to overcome.

Coincidence or Destiny?

EmailsThumbFriends, this has been a remarkable week in which we truly experienced Gods goodness and favour.

As many of you know we have been waiting for a few crucial breakthroughs regarding the development of the GLA Eco Campus in Jeffreys Bay. This multi functional development will serve as a Mission Base – the training and logistics hub for Global Challenge Expeditions, a school - the home of Global Leadership Academy, and also a community centre from where we can influence the local Jeffreys Bay area.

On Monday evening 14 November we had our end year function and it was remarkable how God clearly called our leadership, parents, pupils and GCEX students to raise the level of our faith! No longer can any person be involved only as a spectator or critic... We have to all, as a family stand in faith and trust in the Lord for His provision and favour.

So, then the unbelievable happened...

Developing Update: Eco Campus

GLA-thumbDear friends,

We are sure most of you can identify with being in circumstances that ask of you utter dependence on God.

It is a place where you aren’t able to fall back on any of your own resources, knowledge or previous experiences... You can only trust that God will give direction and provide the necessary support and resources.

In our case, with the development of the land, He has provided abundantly in experts and knowledgeable people to assist and guide us in this venture. He provided architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, and even one of the best project management companies you can find, Aurecon.

God always uses people as his channel of provision, no matter the need.

As you can see, provision in qualified people to do the job hasn’t been our biggest hurdle to overcome up to this stage, but we can tell you, what has – FUNDING.

Oudtshoorn Adventure

Ms-McFarlane riding an Ostrich!Over the years tourism and Global Challenge Expeditions (GCEX) has had a good understanding with each other and it seems Global Leadership Acadamy (GLA) is now finally joining the friendship.

During the long weekend of the 6th to the 9th of August the GLA Tourism class seized the opportunity and organized a trip to Oudtshoorn for a visiting disabled woman and her team from America.

With input and initiative from their teacher, Mrs. Taute, the class put together, seemingly effortlessly, an action packed weekend that the Americans would not soon forget...

Lauren's Testimony

Lauren Dowler on the far right of this picture wrote this article. The tourism class prepared a weekend trip for a group of Americans that were visiting Jeffreys Bay, myself included. The trip was remarkable in more ways that one as we were able to drive and experience the beautiful landscape of South Africa, experience the stars of  Oudtshoorn and visit local sightseeing attractions including the Cango Wildlife Ranch, Ostrich Show Farms, and Cango Caves.

One thing however that really stood out to our entire group was the way the students that came on the trip interacted with one another...

Kuier rondom `n pot

PotjieWie sal nou wil terug kom skool toe oor `n naweek?

Beste in provinsie!

School goes wild

Adventure-CampLast weekend will long be remembered by every student of Global Leadership Academy(GLA) as a weekend embodying the heart of the school.
The staff thought it a good idea to expose the students to a weekend of adventure, teambuilding and input and the perfect way to do this, was through an adventure camp!
