Ironman does his iron maiden

PaulthumbThe 23rd of January 2011 saw East London transform from a simple coastline city into a hub of sweat, stamina and steel.  Over 2700 participants lined up to chase the formidable title of Ironman in a race that only the brave dare attempt.

The Ironman 70.3 is an annual event that consists of 3 demanding disciplines: a 1.9km sea swim followed by a 90km cycle and finally a 21.1km run.  Global Leadership Academy’s Paul du Plessis deemed himself fit enough to compete against the country’s best in this grueling event and in seconds we saw our Business Economics teacher become a lean, mean athletic machine.  But no story is complete without a dramatic twist: 15km into the cycle leg of the race, a snapped chain cost him 30 minutes.  Although experiencing some difficulties the Lord was His usual self and sent a Good Samaritan to assist and he was able to jump right back into the competition.  Mr. du Plessis finished 449th overall and 65th in his age group in a time of 5 hours and 50 min and states “This is one of the best races there is!”.  He is saluted by his colleagues and well deserves the title given by his students of ‘Tank in Pants’!  Well done Paul!
